STANES AMALGAMATED ESTATES, popularly known as SAE, was formed in 1946 with the estates of Crofton, Deepdale (bought in 1938), Kotada (bought in partnership with UNITEA in 1943), Welbeck (bought in 1946, which was originally bought in 1921) and later Cairnhill (bought in 1951). Thus under SAE there are two large estates, known as Kotada Estate and Welbeck Estate, with factories.

SAE is beautifully carpeted over the Nilgiris and over time has earned a niche for itself in the tea industry. Kotada tea has wooed connoisseurs of tea and is eagerly sought after at auction centers - both for domestic sale and the overseas market. Direct exports too, form part of the SAE portfolio.

Over a period of years the company has modernized the factories which has resulted in increased tea production. Both the factories manufacture high quality High Grown Orthodox Black and Specialty Teas apart from which Kotada Tea Factory produces CTC teas and Welbeck Tea Factory produces Certified Organic and Green Teas.

Both the factories are ISO 9001:2000 Certified with sound quality control systems as per international norms and standards. Both the factories are in the process of seeking ISO 14000 Certification and also HACCP Certification. IMO, Switzerland, has certified that the agricultural production of Welbeck Estate is in compliance with the organic production methods as defined by Regulation (EEC) No. 2092/91 and as per USDA NOP standards.

SAE attaches prime importance to the environment and the teas are grown in a hazard and pollution free environment, maintaining ecological balance. Teas of the entire group are 100 % pesticide free. Prime importance is given to employee welfare. It provides educational, healthcare and recreational facilities to its employees.
